Trees NCERT Text Book Questions and Answers
Trees Working with the poem
What are the games or human activities which use trees, or in which trees also ‘participate ’?
Some of the games or human activities which use trees include making tree houses, or swings; having tea parties under them; hiding behind them in hide-and-seek; and using them for shade in the summers.
i. “Trees are to make no shade in winter. ” What does this mean?
(Contrast this line with the line immediately before it.)
This means that in autumn and winter, trees shed their leaves and do not provide shade anymore. In contrast, during the summers, trees provide us shade and keep us cool.
ii. “Trees are for apples to grow on, or pears. ’’ Do you agree that one purpose of a tree is to have fruit on it? Or do you think this line is humorous?
I think the line is merely humorous because the poet has already enumerated the several benefits of the trees. In fact, the purpose of the trees is much beyond providing us with fruits.
With the help of your partner, try to rewrite some lines in the poem, or add new ones of your own as in the following examples.
(Encourage the students to use their creativity to formulate the answers.) Sample answer:
Trees are for birds to build nests in.
Trees are for people to sit under.
Trees are used to make medicine.
Trees save us from rain, lighening and thunder.
Trees give us all the food.
Trees are there to give us wood.
Now try to compose a similar poem about water, or air.
Poem on Water
The Earth is ninety percent water,
And its protection is an important matter.
Water gives us life.
It is the reason we have marine life.
Water makes the fish swim,
And. helps one to stay slim.
Water is why we all exist.
And we must save it, I insist.
