Question 12.
A daily train between Delhi and Aligarh travels a distance of 131 km. Look at the picture below and answer the questions that follow.

(i) How many passengers are there on the train when it leaves Dadri?
(ii) Find the number of people who got off the train at Aligarh.
(iii) Were there more people on the train in New Delhi or in Aligarh? How much more/less?
(iv) How many people travelled altogether by the train?
Answer:
(i) Train starts from New Delhi.
Number of people boarded in train =894
At Ghaziabad, 158 people boarded in train and 23 people alighted from train.
So, number of people in train at Ghaziabad =894+158-23=1029
At Dadri, 67 people boarded in train and 75 people alighted from train.
So, number of people in train when it leaves Dadri =1029+67-75=1021 1021 passengers are on the train after leaving Dadri.
(ii) We are not told how many people boarded at Aligarh.
So, people remaining on the train after Aligarh is 0 because train ends here.
So, all 1021 passengers got off. 1021 people alighted at Aligarh.
(iii) People on train at New Delhi =894
People on train at Aligarh = 1021
So clearly, more people were on the train in Aligarh.
Difference =1021-894=127
Hence, 127 more people were on the train in Aligarh.
(iv) People who boarded the train are New Delhi =894, Ghaziabad = 158 and Dadri = 67
Number of people travelled altogether by the train =894+158+67=1119
Hence, 1119 people travelled on the train altogether.
