Activity 1.

Aim: To understand and apply the steps of the scientific method to a real-life problem.
Materials Required: Pen or pencil, notebook, etc.

Procedure:
The scientific method is a step-by step process that scientists use to find answers to questions and solve problems.
1. Observation

  • Notice somethíng interesting or unclear.
  • Example: You see a plant growing towards the light.

2. Question

  • Think of a question about what you oberved.
  • Example: Why does the plant grow towards the light?

3. Hypothesis

  • Make an educated guess (hypothesis) about the answer to your question.
  • Example: The plant grows towards the light to get more sunlight for photosynthesis.

4. Experiment

  • Test your hypothesis by doing an experiment or making more observations.
  • Example: Place plant in different lighting conditions and observe their growth.

5. Analysis

  • Look at the results of your experiment to see if they support your hypothesis.
  • Example: Compare the growth of plants in different lighting to see if they grow towards the light.

Observations: Scientific methods help us to understand the world around us.

Activity 2.

Aim : To recognise that scientific principles are present in everyday life and surrounding.
Science is all around us from tiny grains of sand to huge mountains from single leaf to entire forest.

Examples :
1. Stars shining in the sky:science explains the stars shine because of reactions happening inside them.
2. Flowers blooming:plants respond to light and temperature, which helps them know when to bloom.

Activity 3.

Aim : To encourage students to ask questions and develop their curiosity about the world around them.
Materials Required : pen or pencil, paper, notebook, etc.

Procedure:
Earth: The only planet we know that has life. It has many different environments and living things.

Examples:
1. Plants : How does a seed grow into plant?
A seed needs water, sunlight and nutrients from soil to grow.

2. Animals : How does a caterpillar turn into a butterfly?
This change is called metamorphosis.
Result : It is always more fun to discover things together.

Introduction

Humans have always been curious about the world around them. This curiosity drives us to explore and ask questions. Think about how babies and toddlers constantly touch, taste and observe everything around them. This natural curiosity is foundation of science. The most wonderful thing about science is that it is everywhere. From the depths of the ocean to the vastness of outer space, some of most ground breaking discoveries have often come from unexpected places.

What Is Scientic Method ?

Science is not just about memorising facts and figures or doing experiments. It is about following a step-by-step process that helps us find answers to our questions.

→ Scientific Method: The systematic observations, reasoning, model making and theoretical prediction form the scientific method. The scientific method involves several interconnected steps: Systematic observations, controlled experiments, qualitative and quantitative reasoning, prediction and verification.

Suppose your pen stops writing. You would ask yourself “Why did my pen stop writing.” You might guess that the ink finished. You would then test this guess by opening the pen and checking the ink refill. If it is empty, you would know that your guess was correct.

But suppose you find that the ink was not finished you would make another guess – perhaps the ink might have dried up. To test, if this guess is correct or not, you will by something else. This is exactly how science works. The way you tried to find out why your pen stopped writing is an examples of the Scientific method.

→ Scientists are people who follow the scientific method to solve problems or to discover new things. Anyone who follows the scientific method is working like a scientist. Some one cooking food may be wondering why the dal (pulse) has spoiled out of the cooker? Was there too much water.

→ Much like children enjoying the rain, science is all about joyful exploration. Enjoy your scientific journey, keep exploring and never stop wondering about the amazing mysteries of the universe and asking questions.
